If you haven’t heard of Henry Gunderson, you aren’t paying attention. The California young blood has experienced an extremely meteoric entrance into the public eye over the past two years. Gunderson, now in his second year at SFAI, secured his first solo exhibition, with FFDG of San Francisco, at the tender age of eighteen. There’s a strong inclination to wonder what the kid will do once he’s gone and graduated; once his skills have been submitted to the academic pressure cooker for another year or two. But then again, he’s done so much already that such musings are a waste of time. In the present, Gunderson’s illustrative, nostalgic symbolism and mysterious connections within the contemporary art world are enough.
